I
arrived in Jamaica on Wednesday. I absolutely love it here.
The drive from the airport took 3 hours instead of the 1.5
hours I thought when I looked at a map because the roads are
insane. I love insane roads. Potholes everywhere, no center
dividing line, and drivers use the horn more than the
brakes. Driving here is also different because everybody
waves to each other and instead of sedate pedestrians on the
side of the road you will sometimes see people just dancing
for fun. I love the music here.
The
YWAM base is what remains of an old plantation. I write from
what remains of a 200 year old great house. I stay in the
men's dorm with 5 other guys (6 when Jake Knapp arrives).
There will be a total of 14 students in the Discipleship
Training School, 7 men, 7 women. Roughly half the students
are Jamaican and half international.
It is
hot here, but not too bad because of the frequent thunder
showers. Yesterday it rained so hard that all of Jamaica
turned into a river. I love thunder showers. They say that
some time in October it will start raining and it won't stop
for 1 month. It is good to do laundry (manually) before it
starts raining because it will be impossible to dry clothes
during that time. I have never done laundry manually but I
will probably love that too. Did I mention I love Jamaica? I
even like the cold showers and exotic bugs. I especially
love the Jamaicans. When they talk to each other I have no
idea what they're talking about. When some one gives a
greeting ("respect", "kris", "irie"
etc) a good response is "zeen". I have no idea
what that means but I say it all the time. They say I will
understand Patois in two weeks but I doubt it. So
you get the picture: I love it here.
Gotta go. Pray for my studies.
